Grain Media was started in 2006 by two chaps from extreme sports backgrounds. They were thrown in the deep end by winning a 14 part TV series in their mid twenties. Since those exciting (and scary) early days, Grain has grown into a multi-award winning, highly respected production company.

Grain’s output is incredibly diverse. Our time is split fairly evenly between documentary and commercial work for a huge variety of clients. We’ve recently begun making feature films which we very much enjoy because we get to say things like “It’s the movies, baby,” and smoke big cigars and wear braces and shout at each other in American accents.

We’ve won an embarrassing number of awards. We try not to be too serious about stuff, and we always make sure our work is of the highest possible standard. We are bloody brilliant, and if you don’t believe us, just ask our Mums. They proper love us.

Nice things people say about us

“The team at Grain are the best in the business. Reliable, flexible, always able to deliver whatever the budget and timescale. They’ve got a great attitude and are willing to get stuck in creatively.”

Tom Winterton, Senior Account Director, Citizen Relations
“Grain Media are an absolute joy to work with. They’ve produced a huge number of films for Al Jazeera English from every corner of the globe, and have done so to the highest standards. They approach each job with creativity and the utmost professionalism, winning awards for Al Jazeera in the process.”
Neil Cairns, Series Producer, Al Jazeera English
“It’s been a pleasure working with the folks at Grain Media. Tenacious in finding stories, true to their values and to their protagonists, and a fantastically collaborative team. Couldn’t be prouder of them for their work on Virunga.”
Maxyne Franklin, Director, BRITDOC Foundation

Our Team

  • Orlando “The Count” Ernle Benedict Graf Von Einsiedel

    Managing Director

The most excited man on the planet and the co-founder father of Grain Media, Orlando is a leading voice in documentary film making. He’s won many, many awards for his brilliant docs but we all have our fingers crossed that one day he will win the one gong he is surely due “Worst Dressed Man on The Planet”. It’s as if his wardrobe hates him. He’s the hardest working guy at Grain and we all worry about him a lot when he goes on his crazy fact finding adventures across the globe.

  • Jon “Field Marshall” Drever

    Managing Director

Co founder of Grain, Jon used to make skate films. That’s about as cool as he got. Now he spends his time making most of Grain’s scripted content, and worrying about things like “how old can you be and still have long hair?” and “Is it really OK to wear lycra cycling shorts?”. He makes a lot of comedy stuff and tries to write things.

  • Harri “Harry” Grace

As brilliant as he is short, Harri came to us first as an actor, then realised that being at Grain was better than both the parties he’d ever been to, so he ditched his 9-5 job and came to work for us as a producer. Turns out he’s really great at it and is winning lots of awards and doing lots of exciting films for Grain in exotic places. NB: Harri is a man, he is not called Harriet, it’s just how they spell “Harry” in Wales

  • Adam “Mitch Buchannon” Mitchenall

    Head of Production

Adam occasionally calls himself “the poor man’s Stephen Merchant”, but we think Merchant is a poor Mitchenell. A relatively new member of the team, Adam is here to streamline our productions and make sure everything runs smoothly. He’s the Black Beard of our mighty ship. But slightly more ginger. He’s the Auburn Beard of our mighty ship.

  • Amelia “High Horse” Franklin

    Gorilla pic
    Production Manager

Winner of Brixton’s “Owner Who Looks Most Like Their Dog” contest 1990, Amelia is the bedrock of Grain, and by that we don’t just mean rock hard and craggy. She’s the one person who really knows what’s going on round here, always first in and last to leave (like that bloke you didn’t realise you’d invited to your party) she’s the glue of Team Grain. She has a heart of gold, she just keeps it in the freezer to make it last longer.

  • Richard “Ricky Ticky Tarvy” Jephcote

    Cinematographer / Facilites Manager

Not many people have their own theme tune. Ricky Ticky Tarvey has two. RTT runs our kit hire business and is also a dab hand behind the lens. He can take a camera apart, rebuild it using gaffa tape and old cabbages, and escape from enemy hands whilst delivering an important moral message. If you’ve got a tech question, give him a call. If you have a Dr Who question, give him a call. If you want someone to make you tea, best not to call.

  • Nick “Team Tall” Rowley

    Assistant Producer

Nick is Grain’s mild mannered production hero, and third leg of the impressive trio of giants that makes up Grain’s Team Tall. If there’s a story lurking, he’ll sniff it out, and if he doesn’t, the story stinks. Looks like a hipster, tastes like a poet, smells like a champion.

  • Sonia “Einstein’s an Idiot” Peart

Sonia makes sure all our numbers add up. You know the accountant in the Untouchables who blows things up with a shotgun? Sonia would eat that guy for breakfast, then ask for seconds. No one here would even mention that she’s turned into a cannibal, she’s just that good.

  • Angus “Poppa D” Drever

    Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 12.35.06

The one Drever in the office everyone loves, Poppa D works part time at Grain making sure the business is running smoothly. He occasionally passes around spreadsheets which no one really understands and throws around Dad gags just because he can.
